The project, the result of a two-step international competition, is distinguished by an attempt to translate into action, by architectural means, the increased hygienic demands and new insights of care emerging from the perspective of medical technology.

An attempt is also made to substantially improve the staff's and inpatients' situation by means of facade technology and lighting engineering. The renovation and enlargement of the operating tract and all present outpatient clinics, the reconstruction of the Intensive Care, Traumatology and Psychotherapy Divisions, the heliport, the mother-and-child house and the personnel tract, as well as the comprehensive adaptation of the existing inpatient unit and other buildings to current and forthcoming standards, altogether act to realize a novel type of hospital.
